Mass Governor Unveils Proposed FY2015 Budget

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick’s proposed $36.4 billion FY2015 state budget plan reflects a spending increase of 4.9 percent over the current budget. It also taps $175 million in emergency “rainy day” funds, a move that has received criticism since the budget proposal was released on Jan. 22, 2014. (It should be noted that the proposed draw is only half of what was required to balance last year’s budget, and would leave the Rainy Day Fund with a projected $1.2 billion balance at the end of FY15.)

According to the governor, the 2015 fiscal year spending plan “expands early education, adds jobs, closes the achievement gap in schools, ensures health care is affordable, and addresses youth and urban violence.”
